Marcel Reginald Henry

November 9, 1940 — December 4, 2020

Marcel Reginald Henry passed away on Friday, December 4th, 2020. He'd just celebrated his 80th year of life on the 9th of November. This gentle, caring soul is survived by his loving wife, Eulaee B. Henry, daughter, Odette J. Belton, son-in-law, Douglas Belton, Jr., and his granddaughter, Olivia L. Belton who affectionately called him 'grandpa Florida', siblings, Rudolph (Coda), Dorothy (Onie), Eric, Ephraim (John) and Aneita (Annie), cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who were his family.

Jamaica, the tropical isle of his birth and rich soil of his upbringing, was the root of his existence as one of twelve children (the 'Henry Twelve' – Rudolph, Antoinette, Lucy, Dorothy, Eric, Ephraim, Marcel, Clive, Lloyd, Lawrence, Aneita and Martin) until 1962. His earliest self-recorded memories of his childhood were actually as an amateur arsonist at age five having accidentally set his parent's, Alexander and Rhoda Henry, homestead afire. Unscathed and leaving that past behind, he grew as an inquisitive young mind whose zeal for learning encompassed his entire life's journey. Growing up as the 'middle child' he cultivated his love of reading, church and developed a steadfast personal relationship with God that in his own words had "…infused [his] whole life and instilled in [him] an upward look."

In 1962, he made passage from Jamaica to the United Kingdom for school succeeding his older brother Eric and began an adventure that would see him travel, study and work throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. He devoted his life to the profession of teaching and his ability to enlighten, served others in and outside of the classroom. Marcel Reginald was a brilliant man who could easily correspond in vivid prose as he could relay a simple commentary that would have you waiting on the edge of your seat for his next sentence. When he spoke, there was power in his prose and his pauses.

His generosity and good nature drew people to him for life. Throughout his life he built a community out of family and friends adopted as family. When someone called out 'uncle Reg' in an instant they were acknowledging how they'd benefited from his guidance, quick-wit, humor and humility. Many have been blessed to have his written words either in books, letters, cards and emails etc. to reflect and remember him always. His life was well-lived in that he was never selfish with his passion, beliefs or care for others. He will be missed beyond measure by all who knew and loved him. Rest peacefully until we meet again.
