María Castora Avilés de Olán, age 95 of Orlando, FL went home to be with the Lord peacefully after a short illness on June 18, 2016.
She was born March 28,1921 in Añasco, Puerto Rico to Marcos Lugo and Maria Eladia Aviles.
She was a very precious and loving Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother and friend that was always reminding us how much she loved each of us. She was a woman of faith and a child of God.
She is survived by her son, Eugene Olan, and daughter-in-law, April Olan; granddaughters, Norma Collazo, Raquel Collazo, Meredith Olan, and Stephanie Olan; great-granddaughters, Caroline Collazo and Xena (zeé-na) Dixon; 6-nephews; 2-nieces; and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She is the widow of Eugenio Olán, and is pre-deceased by her 2 daughters, Iris Mabel Olán and Norma Iris Olán.
After marrying in Puerto Rico, Maria moved her young family to New York City in the 1940s, and subsequently moved to Norwalk, Connecticut in the mid-1950s. There she worked for many years as an Assembler at the Zell Corporation, and became one of the first women in her family to become a licensed driver and bought her new 1960 Chevrolet Impala that she proudly drove everywhere. Alongside her husband, she helped co-plant the First Spanish Seventh Day Adventist Church of Bridgeport, Connecticut in the mid-1960s.
But most importantly, Maria was known for her love of family, devotion to her children, and enjoyed working in her flower gardens, as well as being photographed with a back drop of colorful rose bushes. Above all, she was known for her infectious smile and kind greetings for everyone she encountered.
Maria lived with a strong faith of the resurrection in Christ, and looked forward with great expectancy to the day that she would be reunited in eternity with her daughters and other loved ones that went before her.
A memorial service was held for Maria at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 in the funeral chapel at Florida Hospital East in Orlando.
A graveside service will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 8, 2016 at Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk, CT.
