On Friday, November 8th, 2019, Maria Isabel Gonzalez, the matriarch and rock of the Gonzalez family, passed away at the age of 93. She will forever be missed, but what she gave to us will live on through all of the years to come.
Maria was born on August 11, 1926, in Ponce, Puerto Rico to her parents Isabel and Ramon Rodriquez. In 1942, she married Bienvenido Gonzalez and moved to New York soon after to continue growing her beautiful family.
Maria loved a few things like dominoes and bingo, but there was nothing that she loved more than her family. From her husband and children all the way down to her greatest grandchild, Maria loved them with everything she had. Her heart was gold, and her love was pure. Family was everything to Maria, and she instilled this feeling of togetherness and love into everyone she came in contact with. Her compassionate spirit is something that no one can recreate. Maria was an angel, a real-life, hardworking, caring, loving, extraordinary little angel of ours, and after 93 years God needed her back.
When we remember Maria (also known as Mama), we remember her selflessness and her generosity. One of her many phrases, "Cuando hay hambre no hay pan duro" speaks to us about the sacrifices she made for her family and the love she had for everyone around her. And while she has gone "choopooloon" physically, in Heaven with our God you can almost hear her shouting "me heaarrring!" if you listen closely enough. Maria knew the value of life, and her legacy is the untouchable kind.
Maria is survived by her eight children, seven daughters, Luz, Digna, Ana, Migdalia, Magda, Mildred, and Sandra, and one son, Wilfred. She also leaves behind twenty-five grandchildren and an abundance of great and great-great-grandchildren.
Que Buena Vida, si durara… Ninety-three years of pure love and compassion and it still doesn't feel like enough. Until the days that we meet again, we keep Maria in our thoughts, hearts, and memories. We love you Mama, more than words can ever convey. Sleep in peace.
