Maribel Ortiz-Pina

June 21, 1961 — January 8, 2019

Maribel Ortiz Pina, 57, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away on January 8, 2019.

She is preceded by her brother, Andres Ortiz Jr.; her paternal grandparents, Andres and Angelina Ortiz; and her maternal grandparents, Esteban and Rafaela Figueroa.

She is survived by her parents, Andres and Luz Ortiz; her sister and husband, Iris and John Mahon; her brother and wife, Hector and Diorchinie Ortiz; her children, Peter Andres and wife Nidia, Julian Alexander, and Julisa Victoria; her grandchildren, Maximiliano, Valentina, and Paloma; her nieces and nephews, Katherine, Jaqueline, Lauren, Sean, Alexander and Nicolas; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mari was a devoted Mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was a go-getter who loved life and traveled extensively. She was one of the first female highway repairers for the City of New York, an entrepreneur, and a strong advocate for career-minded individuals. Mari did not let anything get in her way, not even when breast cancer first struck 10 years ago.

Her biggest love and pride were her children, attending each of the activities her children participated in, including basketball games, swim meets, and cheerleading. One of her greatest joys was witnessing the wedding of her first born, who resides in Illinois. She attended each christening in Illinois despite debilitating health issues. Her first goal was to serve as a shining example to her children by marching forth and persevering any and all obstacles. As a single mother, Mari received her MBA from the University of Central Florida. When she went into remission, she continued her education at UCF and became a doctoral candidate.

Mari was truly loved by many and with good reason. See, Mari loved people not in an ordinary way; her love for others was extraordinary. Once you became Mari's friend, she wanted everyone that she loved to meet you, and before you realize it, these newfound friends became your friends as well.

Mari became a member of the Cross Life Community and baptized last Mother's Day. Her love for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends of her children had no bounds. It was no accident she was baptized on Mother's Day.
