Maritza Hernandez 1970-2016
There are many things to be said about the legacy of Maritza Hernandez. Although her journey ended too soon, she has touched the lives of many with her warm heart, endearing kindness, feisty latin flair, and her giving soul. Maritza helped anyone in need, opening up her home, her heart and her family to anyone less fortunate than her. She was passionate about her four children: Marcelo, Luis, Anissa, and Angelina. Being an active parent, she was known for being very involved in their schooling and extra-curricular activities. Her love of life was palpable, as she enjoyed cruising, traveling, and spending all her time with her family.
One of her favorite times of year was Christmas, which was evident in the level of detail she would decorate her home and the joy it would bring for her to include friends and family in her Christmas meals. Maritza always paid attention to details, communicating her love openly to all those she held dear, never forgetting a birthday, anniversary or special occasion. She accepted all walks of life as friends and did not pass judgment on others. She had a strong Catholic faith, attending mass regularly and instilling that faith in her children.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, her positive attitude and strong will motivated those around her to have a new appreciation for life. She established long lasting friendships throughout this difficult journey and volunteered her time and energy to raising awareness for a disease she knew she would defeat. Those that joined her on her journey are hard pressed to forget her strength and positivity as every one of us around her knew she was going to "kick cancer's ass."
We refuse to say she lost her fight to cancer, because her fight was unlike any other many have ever seen. Everyone who knew her, knew she was undefeated. Her legacy will live on by those who survive her: her devoted husband Carlos, children Marcelo, Luis, Anissa, Angelina, step-children Megan and Carlos Jr., her adoring parents Miguel and Gloria, her brothers Daniel and George, as well as many extended family members and close friends. She is preceded in death by her brother David (2001).
