Marjorie Hardy Gilbert

October 27, 1920 — October 10, 2021

Marjorie Hardy Gilbert, 100, longtime resident of Winter Park, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021 at the Mayflower Retirement Community. Marjorie was born in Long Beach, California on October 27, 1920, the youngest child of Carl A. Hardy and Gayle P. Hardy of Hudson, Indiana. She was a graduate of Pleasant Lake High School in Indiana and the University of Michigan, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and completed a degree in history. After graduation, she taught kindergarten until 1945. At the end of World War II, she met and married Col. Lawrence G. Gilbert, a B-24 pilot and base commander of the 392nd Bomb Group in Beeston, England. After serving in the Air Force and moving frequently throughout the U.S. and abroad, they retired to Winter Park in 1960.

Marjorie enjoyed singing with the choir of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, serving as a "pink lady" hospital volunteer, and playing bridge with friends. Family gatherings, travel and music were among the highlights of her life.

She is survived by her daughter Anne Brooks (David); son Lawrence Gilbert, Jr. (Patty); grandchildren Darcy Cuthill (Kary); Sarah Snell (Scott); Lauren Gilbert (Stephen Ruane); Taylor Gilbert (Kimberly); great-grandchildren Rachel, Ryan and Jacqueline Cuthill; Caroline, Sydney and Hunter Snell; Edith and Andersen Gilbert; and Adelaide and George Ruane. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, and by her brothers Robert B. Hardy, Gordon A. Hardy and sister Ardell L. Cleland.

Memorials may be made to the Benevolent Fund of the Mayflower Retirement Community or a charity of your choice.
