Mark Nicholls, affectionately known as "Small Change," passed away on March 18, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, after a courageous battle with cancer, following a ten-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on August 15, 1954, in Cleveland, Ohio, and his journey through life touched countless hearts along the way.
Mark's passion for learning and his vibrant spirit shone brightly throughout his career. He began his professional life working as a chemist in industrial plating companies before embarking on a remarkable 26 and a half-year tenure at Disneyworld. A true Partner of Excellence, Mark made a significant impact at the company, proudly contributing to its magic while forming lasting friendships with many fellow cast members. His encyclopedic knowledge of Disneyworld was matched only by his warmth and willingness to direct anyone in need, as he would gladly guide them through the park or the city of Orlando.
Mark was more than just a dedicated employee; he was a beloved family man. He cherished every moment spent cheering from the sidelines at high school football games, where he took great joy in watching his daughter, Paula, perform with the marching band for over six years. His presence in the crowd was a source of encouragement and pride, exemplifying the love he held for his family.
The story of Mark and his wife, Shelley, is one of fateful connection and enduring love. A chance introduction by a mutual friend led to an enchanting evening of conversation that lasted until the bar closed. Shelley recalls vividly how, as they departed and driving home with the friend , she boldly stated that he would be the man that she was going to marry—a testament to the deep bond they would share. Their life together was filled with laughter and warmth, reinforced by Mark’s big teddy bear personality, always ready to strike up a conversation with a stranger and leave them smiling.
Mark's educational journey began at Collinwood, where he graduated before attending Northwestern University. There, he proudly played as a defensive end on their football team, a testament to his competitive spirit and love for the game. Outside of work and family, Mark found solace in his hobbies, enjoying golf, softball, and immersing himself in the thrilling narratives of Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Shelley Nicholls, and his cherished daughter, Paula Nicholls. He is also remembered fondly by his brothers, Chuck and Brian Nicholls, as well as several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews who were all touched by his loving nature.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Jacqueline Nicholls, and his grandparents, Charley and Donna Bishop. Their guidance undoubtedly shaped the wonderful person he became, and their memories live on through those who loved him dearly.
