Martha H. Kendrick

November 28, 1932 — August 11, 2021

Martha Elsie Hayes Kendrick, 88, Kingsport, Tennessee, died Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital in Orlando.

She was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee, and often said she drew her strength from the green hills there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tinafair Stallard Hayes and George W. Hayes; her sister, Nancy H. Kershner; her twin, Margaret H. Siler; and her brother, George R. Hayes.

She attended East Tennessee State University, focusing on education and psychology. She was a substitute teacher for several years before working at Kingsport Press. She was a retired tipping machine operator.

Martha was a prayer warrior, and a firm believer in Jesus Christ. She received Him as her savior in her teens. She was Pentecostal.

Martha was an avid gardener and a voracious reader. She loved the sciences. She loved traveling with her children, and often said Venice was her favorite city.

Some of her adventures include riding a camel into the sunset, dipping her fingers in the waters in the cave of Hercules, staring in wonder at Michaelangelo's David and the Book of Kells, barrelling down a mountain in a basket cart, shopping at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, walked the streets of Pompeii, visiting the site of the first Olympics, strolling through Rome on the arm of a singing tour guide, driving through Patagonia in the dead of night to visit a penguin colony, hot air ballooning and canoeing a river.

She was known for her wit, zest for life and spunky attitude.

She will be sorely missed.

Survivors include her two children, daughter, Mary M. Kendrick, of the home, and son, Jerry P. Kendrick, Orlando; two sisters, Reva H. Jones, Sneedville, Tennessee, and Sheila Clarke, Woodstock, Georgia; brother, George M. Hayes, Cluster Springs, Virginia; several cousins; and several nieces and nephews.
