Devoted Wife, Loving Mother, Dearest Friend
MARY CAROLYN SMITH POHL, at age 81, died on 4 January 2020. She was the granddaughter of Avery C. Smith, one of the 1910 founders of Miami Beach. The coral rock house the Smith family designed and built in 1916 still stands on Collins Avenue and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Mary Carolyn was the daughter of Avery C. Smith, Jr. and Nell Brannen Smith of Miami. She is also descended from four of the passengers on the Mayflower, which sailed from England and arrived at now Plymouth, MA in 1620.
She was in the Class of 1956 at Miami Edison High School and attended Stetson University before she was married to John S. Pohl, the boy down the street in Miami. They were married 62 years.
She was a longtime resident of Orlando having settled here in 1960 in a then small city surrounded by orange groves. Survivors are her husband, their daughter Carol Ann Pohl of Orlando, and their son John Jr. of Tennessee. She was a stay at home mom, the family chauffeur, a room mother, a Brownie Troop leader, and Band Mom for Stonewall Jackson Jr. High and Boone High School.
She later became a professional travel agent with training at Mid-Florida Tech. She traveled the world and helped many to do the same. She loved being at the beach or on the water and was a frequent cruise ship passenger. She had been in some portion of all 50 states, and then branched out to cover all 7 continents with either her husband or daughter as a travel companion. Her last big trip was a safari to Kenya to see the world's wild animals in their natural habitat. She loved many furry children in her life leaving behind two kitties and three grand-kitties. Her last word on this earth was "meow."
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 12, 2020, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - East Orlando Chapel, 895 S. Goldenrod Rd, Orlando, FL 32822.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020, 10:00 am at Newcomer Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, FL.
