Mary Virginia Riesen ("Mary V") passed away on May 5, 2012. A graveside service was held with her family on May 8. An open house in celebration of her life will be held at the Riesen home from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday May 12. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Comforter in Orlando.
Eighty-one years ago, Mary V was born with great promise, great opportunity, great success, and great challenge before her. By 1962, David, Sharon, Melodie and Randy had the nurturing support of their mother, Mary V, guiding their growth and achievements. And now, 50 years later, each have children of their own who benefit from the steadfast focus of their grandmother and all reflect her warmth and spirit. To her grandchildren and great-grandchild she was lovingly known as "mom mom."
Mary V sang. Her voice raised the listener's view as her lyrics of faith and commitment rewarded those seeking direction. Her song was complemented by her energy to support those in need. Her rigor to help her community echoed her beautiful words of inspiration. Those she touched, had their own days brightened.
Mary V's path from Ohio through Maryland, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Illinois and Florida, left a trail of lifted souls, and reflected her focus and skill of sustaining a healthy home for her own family. Through those she has touched, and through those she has raised, the cornerstone of selfless compassion for others became her legacy.
Mary V, despite a life of physical restraints and painful conditions, thrived to share. She shared her faith, her optimism, her time, and most of all her love. She also shared her strength and courage, which she developed through facing so many personal trials including the loss of her first infant, Marsha. She gave of herself even when it may have been difficult and painful. So many enjoyed the blessing of Mary V's compassion and guidance.
Mary V was the devoted wife of Don Riesen for over 60 years. Together they forged a place, together they made their way. As Don pursued his pastoral endeavors, Mary V was an integral part of his ministry, and achieved her Masters in Counseling. Over the next three decades, she shared her education focus at Orlando Junior Academy, and committed herself to social work, grief counseling, and child development at Florida Hospital. In her later years, Mary V was essential to the creation and naming of Hospice of the Comforter.
Mary V, we will miss you. We know your physical pain has thankfully ceased, but your guidance and light will never end.
