Matthew Robert McGuffee, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Sanford, Florida on December 13, 2022 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 28 years old.
Matt, a/k/a 'Guff,' was known for his kind spirit, huge heart, and incredible sense of humor. Matt never met a stranger and always enjoyed the art of making people laugh. Matt was an eternal optimist and a constant source of cheer and good vibes. He was also an exceptional writer, a talented lacrosse player, a skilled fly-fisherman, and a lifelong Jaguars fan.
Matt graduated from Lake Howell High School in 2012 where he starred as captain of the Silverhawks' varsity lacrosse team. Matt led the Silverhawks in points his junior and senior years and earned first team All-District and first team All-Area honors as a senior. Matt also won the U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award and the prestigious Bob Scott Award for Central Florida.
Matt took his talents to Rollins College where he earned an academic scholarship and walked onto the Tars' Division II lacrosse team. Matt also served as President of the Florida Omicron Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Section Editor and Staff Writer for The Sandspur. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Critical Media and Cultural Studies in 2016.
Professionally, Matt spent five years at Mud Hole Custom Tackle in Oviedo where he worked as a social media manager, writer, editor and pro staff coordinator, developing Mud Hole's social media platforms and elevating its brand to new heights. It was at Mud Hole that Matt honed his knowledge and passion for fly fishing and rod building. He later accepted a position as an executive recruiter with Craft Recruiting where his writing and people skills continued to flourish.
Matt touched lives everywhere he went, but his favorite places to venture were the Sanford Riverwalk, Celery City, and Mosquito Lagoon.
Matthew is survived by his parents Ken and Nancy, his brother Michael, his sister-in-law Allison, his nephews Colin and Cameron, and his beloved Abbey.
