Mildred A. Hughes

d. April 16, 2004

On April 16, 2004, Miss Mildred A. Hughes, formerly of Baltimore died just prior to her 100th birthday. For the past 14 years, she lived in Florida and for the past 3 years, at the Florida Living Nursing Center in Apopka, FL.

The Hughes Family was prominent in Baltimore in the late 1800s and early 1900s for manufacturing fine bedroom furniture. They owned the Hughes Furniture Manufacturing Co., Inc. which occupied one square city block at the intersection of Haubert and Beason Streets in Locust Point from 1872 when it was founded by Ms. Hughes' grandfather, Jacob Hughes, Sr. until the early 1930s when Jacob Hughes, Jr. closed it during the depression. The building stood until the 1980s when it was torn down. However, the business remained in one form or another through Howard A. Hughes and then Howard J. Hughes into the late 20th century.

Ms. Hughes grew up in Baltimore, graduated from Eastern High School and Strayer's Business College and at age 18, went to work for United Railways which became the Baltimore Transit Co. and, later, Maryland Transit Authority. The Hughes Family lived on Calvert Street during the cold months and their home in Manhattan Beach on the Magothy River in Anne Arundel County during the warm months.

At age 70, after 52 years with the same company, a still standing record, she retired to her home in Loch Raven Village. In 1990, she and her sister-in-law, Stella Hughes, moved to Florida. Stella died in 1991. Following a stroke, Ms. Hughes health declined and she moved first to an assisted living facility and then to the nursing home.

She is survived by her niece Mrs. M. Adele Powell and her husband James I. Powell of Lake Mary, FL, her nephew Howard J. Hughes and his wife Elizabeth P. Hughes of Loch Raven Village in Baltimore, MD, 3 great nieces, 3 great nephews, and 16 great great nieces and nephews. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Moreland Memorial Cemetary in Baltimore, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ms. Hughes' name may be made to Florida Living Nursing Center, 3355 Semoran Blvd., Apopka, FL 32703.
