Mildred "Millie" Ann Colon - 1963-2023
Today, our hearts are broken as we all mourn the loss of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend, Mildred "Millie" Ann Colon. Her bright light and big heart left us too soon, but we will remember her warmth, love and generosity. Millie was born in New York City on February 19, 1963, a city that she loved, second to her pride and love for our beautiful island of Puerto Rico, since she embraced the deep roots of her culture. Millie passed away in Orlando, FL on September 7, 2023, with her beloved family and friends at her side, after battling an extended illness. Millie was educated in New York City at several schools including St. Cecilia's and John Jay High School, and she then obtained her license in cosmetology.
Throughout most of Millie's life, she struggled with illness that she often conquered. One of four children, she often mothered us all and was known to have an abundance of friends. We always joked that she was not happy without her tribe. She was also the happiest when with her grandchildren Jacob and Zayn who they affectionately called, "Wewi."
Until the end, Millie was surrounded by her loving family and friends. We will all greatly miss her smile and her tremendous spirit. But now, we are grateful that she knows what it's like to be genuinely unbound without disease, pain or treatment. She is now resting in peace in the Lord.
We will miss our sister in Christ, as will those she impacted throughout her life, from friends and family in New York City and Florida. Millie's passions involved hosting events for her friends and family to enjoy, and she loved arts and crafts, often creating beautiful souvenirs for parties and special occasions. She loved celebrations and honoring others in a special way and was known as the family "go to" when it came time for planning a special day for someone. Her days were filled with listening to her favorite tunes from Elvis Pressley, Marc Anthony, Michael Bublé, Tito Nieves and Frankie Ruiz. She started playing the Elvis Christmas album in October so she could hear it for months before Christmas and she would always quote Frankie Ruiz, "Boricua, hasta la muerte!" We will think of her fondly and smile and dance whenever we hear her favorite songs. One thing that many of her loved ones had in common with her was her love of the ocean and being in the pool. She never met a water activity that she did not enjoy and she loved to see her feet in the sand. Many of her days were spent on the beaches and pools of New York City and Florida with members of her tribe - it was truly her happy place.
Millie leaves to cherish her memories her parents Felix and Carmen Burgos; her father Pablo Colon and wife Gladys Colon; daughter Jillian Peña and daughter-in-law Denise Moreu; grandsons Jacob and Zayn Peña; siblings Paul Colon and his wife, Betty Larue, brother James Colon, sister Julia Burgos and her husband, Eric Gladden, sister Jeannette Jimenez and her husband Francisco Jimenez, sisters Tania Colon and Tamari Colon, brother Danny Colon, sister Nancy Torres and late brother Johnny Colon. She is also survived by a countless number of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, devoted caregivers and life-long friends.
Our family will be holding a viewing and a public celebration of her life at Newcomer Funeral Home - East Orlando Chapel, 895 S. Goldenrod Rd, Orlando, FL 32822 on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. which will also be live-streamed.

Given the short service and Millie's desire to be cremated, we request that in place of flowers, you donate to an organization in her name. She had a lifelong battle with diabetes and lung disease. Please consider donating a memorial gift to the American Diabetes Association, the American Lung Association or the Rosary Shrine of St. Jude.
