Mirta Sylvia Ortiz, age 73 of Orlando, formerly of Chicago, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017. She was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on September 26, 1943 to Ramon Varela and Carmen Maria Melendez Varela. She was a retired clerk with the Cook County, IL court system. She served as president of the Puerto Rican Lioness Club of Chicago for seven years; was an advocate for abused women and loved making care packages for seniors.
Mrs. Ortiz is survived by her husband, Benito Ortiz; sons, Edward Ortiz and Oscar Ortiz; sisters, Carmen Santos, Martha Rodriguez and Flavia Gonzalez; brother, Oscar Rene Varela; granddaughter, Melissa Perez; grandsons, Valentino Ortiz, Giovanni Benito Ortiz, Alexander Ortiz, Daniel Torres-Ortiz, Gabriel Benito Ortiz; great-grandchildren, Mauricio, Alexis, Katrina, Nathaniel, Giovanni, Gianna, Xavier, Ramissa, and Zayna.
Visitation will be held from 5PM-9PM, Thursday, June 22 at Newcomer Funeral Home, Orlando. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12PM, Friday, June 23 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, Orlando. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Orlando.
