Mitchell Ray Bowers
September 21, 1962 ~ October 27, 2021
Mitchell Ray Bowers, 59, of Orlando, Florida passed away Wednesday, October 27, 2021, of congestive heart failure. Mitch was born September 21, 1962, to Marcia Ann Metcalf and Larry Allen Bowers in Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Colonel Robert and Martha (Liter) Metcalf Jr. and William & Laura (Myers) Bowers
.
He is survived by his mother Marcia and stepfather Douglas Hatfield, father Larry and stepmother Mary Ann Bowers, twin brother Michael (Carolyn) Bowers, and half-sister Jennifer Bowers. He will be missed by all who loved him.
Mitch joined the Army after graduating from Westerville South High School (1982) and because of his height was placed in the armor division. After boot camp and tank training, he was stationed in South Korea on the DMZ. He transferred to the Army Reserves when his tour of duty was completed and finished his military career with an honorable discharge as an Army Specialist (E-4) in 1991.
After the military, he became a long-haul truck driver with US Express and JB Hunt. He found his niche and loved traveling the country delivering goods. He even found time to show off his skills to his grandparents in Texas, his uncle in Chicago and aunt in Ft. Lauderdale. His dad accompanied him on an overnight trip on a long haul one time. He was an avid NASCAR fan and Mark Martin was his favorite NASCAR driver. For his birthday one year he rode in a racecar (175 mph 3 times around the track in a 3-car race formation) at the Atlanta International Raceway. He said it was an unbelievable day! He loved everything about Star Trek and Star Wars and enjoyed collecting their memorabilia.
Mitch found strength and comfort in the Bible in his later years. He earned an associate degree in Biblical Studies and was four courses short of a bachelor's degree. He joined Toastmasters and learned the finer points of addressing a group and writing a good speech. Since he was a veteran, he also joined the American Legion.
Throughout his life, he loved to be around people and always wanted to help folks. He never met a stranger because he would strike up a conversation and they would be friends. He grew up around airplanes and loved watching them at the airport from the top of his mom's VW. Delta was his favorite airline because his dad worked there. He was an organ donor and was able to give the Gift of Sight to a stranger, his last act of kindness.
His ashes will be interred in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Seville, Ohio.
Donations may be made to the VA Orlando Fisher House, 13800 Veterans Way, Orlando, FL 32827 in Mitch's memory. Fisher Houses provide warm and inviting housing free of charge for families of veterans who are in military and VA hospitals worldwide.
