Montgomery Gettys was born on October 24, 1961, in Melbourne, Florida to loving parents Elinor and Joe Gettys. Both of her parents were teachers, but it was her older brother, Joe Gettys (who played at the University of Georgia) who got her into tennis.
Monty was dominant at Melbourne High School and rose to become a top 5 junior tennis player for many years. She was offered a full scholarship to Michigan State University, where she played number 1 for all four years. In fact, she was MSU's athlete of the decade for the 80's. After earning her Masters' degree in engineering, she moved to Indiana for her first job, and then to Orlando as Vice President of AVCON Engineering.
During her time at AVCON, she continued to play exceptional tennis on a national USTA team, eventually meeting her future husband, Craig Uttley. They were married on December 10, 1994. Monty eventually left AVCON and started Montgomery Consulting Group in 1994, where she served as President. Her company grew into a worldwide infrastructure engineering firm, allowing Monty and Craig to travel all over the world with their son, Luke, who was born in 2001.
Monty enjoyed world travel, tennis, skiing, and golf. A testament to how great of an athlete she was is that she has two hole in ones!
Monty is survived her husband, Craig Uttley; her son, Luke Uttley; niece, Beth Gettys-Vaughn; nephew, Matt Gettys; four great nieces and nephews, along with countless friends and family.
A celebration of her life will take place at a later date.
