Muriel Elvita Topping

Mrs. Muriel Elvita Topping, 89, a longtime resident of Winter Garden, Florida, passed away on Monday November 28th, 2011.
Born April 6th, 1922 in the coal mining town of Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of a miner, Joshua Austin Porter and Gladys McNutt Porter. Her parents immigrated to the United States in 1935 with their two daughters, Muriel and Dorothy and settled in the old Colonial New England town of Andover, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Topping graduated from Punchard High School in 1940 and worked in a parachute factory and later married her first husband John Brian Alexander. They remained together through World War II but later divorced. She married Arthur Thomas Topping a prominent car dealer from Methuen, Massachusetts in 1956 and moved to Central, Florida in 1961. She had a total of five children from the two marriages.
She is survived by Kirk Alexander of Williamsburg, Virginia , Mark Alexander of Palm Coast, Florida , Peter Alexander of Winter Garden, Florida, Sharlene Topping Cobia of Bonifay, Florida and Scott Topping of Winter Garden.
As a young girl she loved children and was often employed as a babysitter. At the age of 12 she had her portrait painted by the New England artist Alice Bell and later she worked at the campus bookstore at Phillips Academy in Andover and owned her own dress shop in Groveland, Massachusetts. In Winter Garden later in her life she worked in retail sales.
Whenever she was asked, she always said that her greatest joy and proudest achievement in her life was raising her five children.
A public memorial service will be held at 4 PM on Wednesday December 14th 2011 at the West Orange Church of Christ 1450 Daniels Road, Winter Garden, Florida 34787.
She will be interred at a private graveside ceremony at the Porter family plot in Spring Grove Cemetery, 124 Abbot Street, Andover, Massachusetts 01810 at 1 PM on Monday December 19th, 2011.
