Owsley Sweeney, age 83, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
He was born in Nashville, TN on November 30, 1938, to James Sweeney and Carrie Sweeney.
Affectionately known as "Mathis" by his Nashville friends and family, he attended Haynes High School. Upon graduation, he attended and graduated from Fisk University where he met Carolyn Haulsey, who would be his wife for 36 years. After graduation, he worked as a Social Worker in Bedford Hills, New York. Sweeney then went on to become a Physical Education and Health teacher for Newark Public Schools in Newark, New Jersey. He also served as the head Track and Field coach for Weequahic High School for many years leading his team to achieve winning the National Championship title.
He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter - Kia (Sweeney) Scott of Orlando, Florida, son-in-law – Al Scott, Orlando, Florida, 2 grandchildren, Kayla Jordan Scott and Alonzo Marcus Scott, and his 2 remaining, loving sisters, Peggy (Nell) Bowers and Lettie Jean Walker, both of Nashville, Tennessee.
