Rev. Edwin Harold Wiebel received his crown of glory on Monday, August 1st, when the Lord called him home following a brief illness.
Affectionately called "Pastor Ed" by those who came to know him during his more than 60 years of ministry in the Lutheran Church, he was the third of four children born to Karl and Anna (Sessler) Wiebel, on May 20, 1919 in Wilton Jct., Iowa. Raised on their small dairy farm, Ed went off to Concordia Academy and Junior College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the young age of 15 in order to prepare for the Holy Ministry. He graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri in 1944 and was assigned his first congregation in Anita, Iowa that summer, following his marriage to Gertrude Stoll, his hometown sweetheart.
In 1948, Pastor Wiebel was called to serve St. John Lutheran Church in Buhl, Idaho. Then, in late 1953, he moved his family to Seattle, Washington, where he served Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church for the next 20 years. In 1973, he accepted a call to serve Memorial Lutheran Church in Bremerton, Washington, until his retirement in 1982. In the years since, Pastor Ed remained actively involved in ministry by serving five different congregations as their fulltime interim pastor, the most recent of which being Hope Lutheran Church in Orlando.
Preceded in death by his wife, Gertie, in 1994, Rev. Wiebel is survived by his wife, Lillian (Jakubcin) Wiebel, Oviedo; his son, Rev. James R. Wiebel, Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Orlando; his three daughters, Sandra Thompson, Tieton, Washington, Mary DeHaven and Deborah Wiebel, both of Rock Island, Illinois; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepson, Randy Abell, and step-daughter, Alexis Dickinson, both of Oviedo, and 4 step-grandchildren.
Visitation hours will be Friday, August 5th, 6-8 p.m. at Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road, Orlando; and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 6th, prior to a service of praise and thanksgiving in Pastor Wiebel's loving memory at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1515 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando.
