Richard “Rich” Preston, 78, of Winter Springs, Florida, passed away in the presence of his loving family on May 30th, 2024, due to complications from a fall.
Born on February 17, 1946, in New York City, New York. He grew up in Lexington, Kentucky the heart of horse country. Rich lived a storied life as an adventurous and “spirited” young man, a talented athlete, an Army reservist, and a committed husband and father. Professionally, Rich enjoyed a long and successful career culminating in a prestigious Certified Financial PlannerTM designation.
Rich was brilliant, compassionate, and opinionated. His love of thoroughbred horses and racing was well known by all who spent time with him. His girls reveled at his ability to accurately relay the win, place, and show horses for every year of the Kentucky Derby. He loved to talk politics, sports, local issues, and music. His soundtrack included Tom Petty, John Prine, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Ryan Adams, U2, and general outlaw country. If there is one lasting legacy that will be missed most, it is his gentle spirit, endearing charm, and unwavering loyalty to his family and close friends.
Rich is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Ida; their two daughters Sonia and Leandra; his son-in-law James; his granddaughters Morgan and Phoenix; and his two beloved Maltese dogs, Mia and Daisy.
A private memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Wednesday, June 5 at 3pm at Newcomer Funeral Home in Longwood with a reception to follow. To honor his love for animals, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Rich's name to the Animal Safehouse of Brevard.
