Richard Thomas Watkins
Richard Thomas Watkins of Orlando, Florida passed away Thursday, April, 11th, 2013. Mr. Watkins was a Florida resident since 1956. He attended North Western University in Evenston, Illinois and West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Then, as an engineer he worked in the coal mining industry before joining the Florida Power Corporation in 1956. In the early 1940's, (WWII), Mr. Watkins was wounded in the line of duty while serving on the LST 579 in the Southwestern Pacific area with the Naval Amphibious Forces, landing allied troops on the Japanese held islands.
Mr. Watkins was born in Sutton, Braxton County, West Virginia on August 31st, 1925 to John Herbert Watkins and Mary Elizabeth Sutton Watkins. He is preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers. Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy Jean Watkins of 65 years; a son Robert Lynn and his wife Brenda of Orlando; a son, Thomas Lee and his wife Simone of Dusseldorf, Germany; a son Kenneth Richard and wife Paula of Bonifay, Florida; a daughter Deborah Jean and husband Richard Farrell of Orlando; nine Grandchildren and twelve Great Grandchildren.
Mr. Watkins was deeply loved by his devoted wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He displayed the fruits of the spirit every day as he served his Lord in the church as a deacon since the early 1960's. His ultimate goal was to see his children walk in the ways of the Lord and know that he would one day see them again in Heaven. His laughter and zeal for life was a trait that everyone wanted to possess. His favorite past-time was traveling the open road and camping with his sweetheart Peggy.
Viewing for family and friends will be held Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 from 6 – 8 pm. Services will be held in the chapel at 10:00am, Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 895 South Goldenrod, Road, Orlando, Florida 32822. Kenneth R. Watkins and Robert L. Watkins will be officiating the services. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando following the services.
