On Saturday, October 24, 2020, Robert H. Lewis Jr., loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 79.
Robert was born January 10, 1941 in High Point, North Carolina to Robert and Rose Marie Lewis. A recipient of two Purple Hearts, Robert served over 37 years in the United States Armed Forces, first in the United States Marine Corps, and later in the United States Army. He served 23 years as a Commissioned Officer which ultimately led to his achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While serving in the military, Robert attended Troy State University where he obtained a business degree in Statistics, and later obtained a Master's degree in Counseling from Mississippi State University. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Robert piloted a viety of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, including the UH-1 Huey helicopter and other combat gunships. Robert earned the Army Master Aviator Badge, and held a variety of positions, including training new pilots, executing risky rescues, and investigating accidents. He was a pioneer in developing safety improvements to Aviation Instrument Flight policies which were adopted worldwide.
Robert had a passion for flying. While on flight returns from missions in Vietnam, Robert enjoyed being assigned the rear position aircraft so that he could perform maneuvers without an aircraft behind him to protect. He also loved playing golf, and for over 20 years looked forward to his annual golf trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with his cousins. Robert was a servant of the Lord, serving as an Elder and a volunteer for Vacation Bible School at Parkside Fellowship. He loved Pastor Wayne's sermons and always felt that the sermon spoke directly to him. Robert's positive attitude and gentle demeanor were admired not only by family and friends, but also by anyone with whom he came in contact. He could light up a room with a simple "hello," and simply loved people. Robert also loved dogs and rescued many over the years to provide them a good life and home.
Robert is survived by his wife and soulmate, Kay; his children, Mack, Damon and Shelly; his grandchildren, Jina, Brandon, Cole and Devin; his cousins who were more like brothers, Larry, Barry, and Ron.
A funeral will be held on November 7, 2020 at Parkside Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, 200 N. Wayman Street, Longwood, FL 32750, at 11:30 AM.
