Robert G. MacSweeney, age 79, of Winter Park, Florida; formerly of Woodbury, Connecticut passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024. Born on October 7, 1944, Robert was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and educator whose impact on the lives of many will be cherished forever.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Timothy E. MacSweeney and Rose M. MacSweeney (nee Rinaldi), and siblings, Rosemary A. Lane, John P. MacSweeney, Sr., and Kathleen Derouin.
Robert was married to his devoted wife, Diane, for an inspiring 57 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Maureen and Bob, who were the pride and joy of Robert’s life.
Robert dedicated over 35 years of his life to teaching, sharing his passion for history with countless students. His enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, and he had a unique ability to bring the past to life through his engaging storytelling and deep knowledge. Robert’s dedication to education went beyond the classroom; he was a mentor, a coach, and a guide, always willing to support his students in their academic, athletic, and personal journeys.
Outside of his professional life, Robert was an avid historian. He spent countless hours reading, researching, and exploring historical sites. His love for history was not just a career but a lifelong passion that he eagerly shared with family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to engage in conversation with him.
Robert’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of love, education, and a profound appreciation for the past.
Robert is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Maureen and Bob; his grandchild, Grayce; who brought immense joy to his later years; a sister-in law, Ceil MacSweeney; and many nieces and nephews. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School St., Woodbury, CT. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Teresa’s Church, Woodbury, CT at 10am Saturday, August 17, 2024. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Watertown, CT.
