Sandra Walters 5/14/49 to 1/24/18
On January 24, 2018 Sandie lost her four and a half year battle with invasive breast cancer.
Sandie was born in Racine, Wisconsin and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan at a young age. She attended East Christian High School and graduated from Calvin College in 1971. After graduating from Calvin, Sandie taught middle school in Miami, Florida for five years and then moved back to Grand Rapids and taught at Calvin Christian High School for two years. She meet her husband, Mark, and was married in 1977. They moved to Big Rapids, Michigan in 1978 and it was there that Sandie began her career in the travel industry, which she continued until her retirement. They moved back to Grand Rapids in 1980 and lived there until 2017 when they sold their Grand Rapids home and made Orlando their permanent residence.
Since her retirement in 2012, Sandie enjoyed spending her summers in Michigan working in her flower garden, playing tennis and pickleball, and taking long bike rides. Since 2014, she spent the winters at her home in Orlando and developed a large network of friends. In Florida she enjoyed playing sports, biking, gardening, and bird watching.
Sandie developed noninvasive breast cancer in 2007 but overcame it and became a mentor to many women who developed noninvasive breast cancer. She built a website that helped explained options when a woman has noninvasive breast cancer and went on to mentor many women who visited the website.
Sandie is survived by her husband Mark Walters, children: Lindsey Walters, Doug Walters, and Matt Walters, sisters: Lynda (Rick) Neigh and Debra (Pete) Land, and brothers: Steve (Susan) Van Kooten and Dale (Linda) Van Kooten.
She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Charlene Van Kooten.
There will be memorial services for Sandie in both Florida and Michigan:
Florida: Park Lake Presbyterian Church, 309 E Colonial Dr., Orlando, Florida, on February 10 at 2 o'clock.
Michigan: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 47 Jefferson Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan, on May 19 at 3 o'clock.
