EULOGY

As my illness progressed I knew sooner or later (more sooner than later) that my time here was drawing to an end. I reflected on my life and thought "what would I want my eulogy to say?" I found the classic eulogies to be uninspiring – there was no message for the people who had gathered to celebrate the life of the deceased. So I decided to prepare my eulogy beforehand and try to impart something meaningful to my friends and family.
Ultimately, I would like to leave the world a better place than when I entered it and would hope that by the time I die I could have learned from the years of living and hand something down. So I pondered on the lessons I've learned and what I thought to be the meaning of life.

In my 55½ years I've learned:
• That life is about choices. On every journey you take, you face choices. At very fork in the road you made a choice, and it is those decisions that shape our lives.
• That to have a good friend is the purest of all God's gifts, for it is a love that has no exchange of payment.
• That friendship isn't about who you've known the longest, it's about who came and never left your side.
• That the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition. So I was determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself.
• That anything in life worth having comes from patience and hard work.
• That with grief, you have to take it one day at a time and learn how to find the happiness amidst the heartbreak.
• That forgiveness is something that, when you do it, you free yourself to move on.
• That nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission.
• That what we face may look insurmountable but we are always stronger than we know.
• That there's light at the end of the tunnel (by now I've seen it). And yes, there really is an end to the worst times, no matter how endless they feel.
• That life is too short to waste an ounce of energy on sorting through the past or with worrying about the future. Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles. It empties today of its strength. I've learned to appreciate what I've got.
• That life is a long and difficult road, but you have to keep going, or you'll fall by the wayside.
• That hope can never be taken away. Be the "crazy" one who holds on to hope and speaks hopeful things, even in times of strife. After all, there's tremendous power in our words.
• That positivity is a choice. Most things in life are a choice. And, we can choose how to react or respond to things.
• That the best thing I can do today is to enjoy what's here in my life.
• The essential lesson I've learned in life is to just be yourself. Treasure the magnificent being that you are and recognize first and foremost you're not here as a human being only. You're a spiritual being having a human experience.
• And of course, one of the most beneficial things I've ever learned is how to keep my mouth shut.

We are all here to live, but our individual missions aren't always the same. The meaning of it all, including why we're here, is truly based on one's perspective. It is whatever you ascribe it to be. Whatever we are, whatever we make of ourselves, is all we will ever have. I believe that our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them. I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest significance.

Aristotle said, "Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence." I believe the purpose of life is not only to be happy. It is also to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." "Lead from the heart, not the head." "Always find opportunities to make someone smile, and to offer random acts of kindness in everyday life." "You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness."

"Just Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
We exist in physical form for a finite amount of time. Stop thinking you have time – you don't. Make the decisions you want to make now.

I've always had a kind of inner voice that I have learned to listen to and I'm a believer in fate and in fulfilling your destiny.

Thank you for being part of this celebration.
