SOFRONIO "YOYONG" AGUSTIN
1920 – 2015
Sofronio "Yoyong" Badion Agustin passed away August 17, 2015 at the age of 95.
He was born in the beautiful countryside of Burauen, Leyte, Philippines on July 23, 1920. He came to the United States in 1992 when he was granted citizenship in recognition of his military services to the United States during World War II. He resided in Massachusetts for 2 years and moved to Florida in 1994.
His parents, Francisco Agustin and Rufina Badion had their origins in the farming barrio of Pangdan, Burauen, Leyte. He was predeceased by his siblings Bernardo, Telesforo, Julian and Pedro Agustin and his only sister Maria Agustin Partulan.
He married Petra Salvatierra of Jaro, Leyte in a sort-of-whirlwind romance in 1940. He was widowed in 1990 when "Pet", his beloved wife, passed away. He never remarried since then.
Papa "Yoyong" is lovingly remembered by his sons and daughters and their families; Nito and Tiny; Elvie and Willie (Tan) ; Bimboy and Geline; and Leo and Myrna who are currently residing here in Florida; and Mela and Rowdie (Wilson) who live in Mt. Isa, Queensland, Australia.
He is and will be fondly remembered by his 10 grandchildren: Derick, Nina, Willard, Wella, Rommel, Malen, Nicko, Angelo, Francis and Kent and 11 great grandchildren: Victoria, Gabriel, Lily Grace, Shanshan, Nash, Hansen, Jayve, Jerella, Chloe and Cloudstrife (some of whom are here in the US and others live in the Philippines).
"Yoyong" was a coporal in the United States Army and served during World War II in the Leyte area of operation.
Initially, a grade school teacher and he then became the principal of Burauen Elementary School. Everyday he goes to school and comes back home on his Monarch bicycle. He retired from public service in 1985.
He enjoyed the company of friends with rounds of "tuba" (a local red wine) and his favorite "sumsuman" (appetizer) – muropoto (peanuts). He loved music and loves to dance in a "bari-bari" (dance jam). Everywhere he went he would always wear his favorite Boston Red Sox cap that his grandson Derick gave him as a gift.
As a devout catholic, he served God and the Church as a lay minister, a member of Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus.
