Steve passed away unexpectedly at his home in Merritt Island, Florida on June 22, 2023.
He was born in Atlanta, GA on October 4, 1960. Following in his father's footsteps, Steve decided to venture into engineering and graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Building Construction from Georgia Institute of Technology. Steve was well known in the community for his outstanding career in Construction. After starting in Atlanta with big jobs such as the Mall of Georgia and the King & Queen, he brought that experience to Central Florida where he flourished. It's hard to look around Orlando and not see something that had his hand on it. Steve Rivers has helped lead construction on some of Orlando's most loved and lauded projects – the Mall at Millenia, Darden Restaurants' headquarters, Disney's Pop Century Resort and Universal's Volcano Bay.
Steve was also a member of the Jamestown Historical Society. His family was part of the original group that founded Jamestown and survived the "Starving Time". This group went on to build America. It's no surprise that Steve was such an instrumental player in building Atlanta and Orlando.
Steve's mother, Gloria, majored in music. Although he was engineer-minded, his mother encouraged him in music and by the time he was in college he had a band, Major Haze. His brother Mark played the drums and Steve stepped in the bass guitar role. If you were lucky enough to be with him where karaoke was available, you would be able to hear him sing any number of songs. Steve was warm and gregarious. Wherever he went, he brought tons of stories that would leave you rolling in laughter for hours.
With all of his accomplishments, there is nothing Steve was proud of more than his children and grandchildren. You would often see him in a 7-11 bathroom changing into his coaching gear as he was headed out to coach his boys on the baseball field. You could hear the pride in his voice as told people how beautiful and talented his daughters were. He would tell anyone that being a dad was his major accomplishment.
He is survived by his mother, Gloria Szokoly, his step-mother, Elaine Rivers, his wife, Angela Rivers, his children, Austin Rivers, Ashley Rashley, Addison Rivers, Adam Rivers, Allen Rivers, Audrey Rivers, Avery Rivers, Abby Rivers, step-daughters Raegan Marquez, Ginger Marquez, brother Mark Rivers and Nick Szokoly. Steve has 7 grandchildren: Jimmy, Vance, Adeline, Cooper, Ayla, Duke, Emilia.
He will be sorely missed as husband, son, father and friend.
