Truman Daniel Van Luven, 87, died August 18, 2021, at Suncoast Hospice Care. He was born December 19, 1933, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI the son of William and Daisy (Chapman) VanLuven.
Dan graduated from North Central Bible Institute, Minneapolis, MN in 1956 with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology. He joined the Army in the 101st Airborne Division in November 1956 and completed his tour of duty in November 1958. He married Ruth Kathryn Schmalz in Rockford, IL on November 22, 1958. Pastor VanLuven became the youth pastor at South Saint Paul (MN) Assembly of God. In 1962, Dan and Ruth moved to Rutland, Vermont where Dan served as Senior Pastor at Roadside Chapel Assembly of God church for 42 years. He enjoyed the cold outdoors and especially ice hockey as he "grew up on ice skates" and was a hockey referee in Rutland. Pastor Dan was truly a giving man who donated 172 pints of blood, held services at the local nursing homes, visited the sick in the hospital, and served as the chaplain at the Rutland County Jail. In 2005, Dan and Ruth relocated to Orlando, FL to "retire," and he served as the Visitation Pastor at Faith Assembly. Then he was offered a chaplain position at the Orange County Correctional Center from 2006 to 2013; his passion was for lost souls to come to Jesus.
Survivors include four children, Celeste (Jeff) Thibeau of Largo, FL, Mark (Mary) VanLuven and Ruthann Waters of Orlando, and Sharon (Carlos) Villaverde of Palm Beach Gardens; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, four brothers, George, Robert, Herbert and Alfred, and two sisters, Rose Kelly and Gloria LaLonde.
Friends may visit on Sunday, September 12, from 6 to 7:30pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Rd, Orlando, FL. The funeral service will be held at 10am Monday, September 13, at Faith Assembly, 9307 Curry Ford Rd, Orlando, FL.
