Dr. Thomas Albert Stanford of Maitland, FL, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 23, 2023, just one week after his 96th birthday. He was born on November 16, 1927, to Thomas Howell Stanford and Elma (Spannagel) Stanford.
Dr. Tom grew up in Randlett, OK as one of six children. He served in the US army at the end of WWII, 1945-1947. Dr Tom received his undergraduate degree from Union College and his medical degree from Loma Linda University in 1955. This is where he met his wife of 57 years, Carol Carson (d. 2012). Dr. Tom and Dr. Carol relocated to Maitland, Florida in 1961. They attended local Seventh-Day Adventist churches, eventually joining the Forest Lake Adventist Church. He was one of the early physicians at Jewett Orthopedic Clinic and then eventually opened Stanford Orthopedics, a private practice. Dr. Tom practiced medicine in the Orlando area for 46+ years and retired from private practice in 2007. He also volunteered his skills in Honduras and later at the local Shepherd's Hope Health clinic.
Dr. Tom loved to travel and often took his family on international adventures to Europe, Asia, Antarctica, Africa and South America. For many years, he would gather his immediate family for annual December skiing in Vail, CO. He enjoyed reading, especially Louis L'Amour novels, as well as gardening in his beautiful yard. He was an avid exercise enthusiast who loved jogging and working out at the local YMCA.
Dr. Tom was preceded in death by his five siblings; Marie, Warren, Norma, Nila and Darlena; and his wife Carol. He is survived by his four children; Brian (Steve) Stanford, Cynthia (Tim) Turner, David Carson (Pam McGill) Stanford, and Susan (Carol Friday) Stanford. He is also survived by his four grandchildren Thomas Turner, Laurel (Jacob) Bishop, Jordan Stanford and Parker Stanford and three great-granddaughters Amelia, Alexis and Avalyn Bishop. In addition, he is survived by his chosen family, and great friends Jean Webb, Lashonda, Toney, Akiah and Azion Belfon and Scott Ponder. Dr. Tom, as he was known by many, was blessed with a large extended family, many friends and colleagues.
A private service will be held by the family.
