Verlie B. McNorton died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family on January 15, 2017, at the age of 95.
In 1921, Verlie was born on a rural farm in Southern Alabama. She married and had four children, and in 1968, she went to work for a prominent design firm in Winter Park, FL. In 1973 she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with her Bachelor's degree in Interior Design. Verlie opened her first design studio in 1975 in Atmore, AL, and later in Sebring, FL. Over the years, and thanks to her artful eye, Verlie gained a robust clientele consisting of developers, businesses, churches, schools and private homes.
Her loved ones will remember Verlie for her nurturing, loving spirit. She took great pride in making all of her children's clothing, preparing elaborate dinners from scratch for family and friends, and extending her hospitality to all who entered her home. Verlie touched many lives with her grace, strength, and strong spiritual guidance she provided. She was very active in her church and deeply devoted to the teachings of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
In her later years, Verlie continued to consult on multiple design projects. When she was not consulting, she enjoyed gardening, painting, embroidery and hand crafting beautiful pieces of art for her loved ones. Verlie was a true Southern lady who will be immensely missed and fondly remembered.
Verlie is survived by her four children, Vera Fisher (Hugh), Runette Kile, Glen McNorton and Kalene Talamas (Rene); her five grandchildren, Charlie Kile, Angela Meissner (Warren), Sarah Fisher, Roni Cibischino and Zachariah Fisher; her three great-grandchildren Megan Kile, Austin Kempton and Abigail Kempton; her siblings, Virginia Townsend (Carl), Ethel Wiggins and Marion Bartlett (Melba); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Mitchell and Marcus Bartlett.
Her family would like to thank the ongoing support of her in-home care team, as well as VITAS Hospice Care.
