Virginia Butler Smith of Longwood, Florida, died peacefully in the care of her family on December 31, 2020. Virginia was born on March 18, 1939, in Lenox, Massachusetts, to Theodore and Ethel Butler. She attended high school at Blue Ridge Boarding School in Virginia and received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Virginia married James V. Smith in Orlando, Florida, on December 22, 1962, where they would later raise their family.
Virginia taught special education at Longwood Elementary for 26 years, retiring in 2007. She had a special gift for nurturing young children, especially with books and song. With her sweet spirit, she embodied one of her favorite songs: "Let There Be Peace on Earth: And Let it Begin with Me." She also loved Elvis Presley and the Boston Red Sox baseball players!
Virginia, who often went by Ginia, always maintained her deep love for Lenox, Massachusetts of the Berkshires, where she grew up playing in the brook with her oldest friend Rossy. She returned to visit her many friends and relatives each year until she could no longer do so, especially Auntie Mae (Anna Mae Burke Johnson), whose home on Church Street is where Virginia lived as a child with her parents and sister. She enjoyed researching her genealogical roots and often visited her father at the Butler plot near the Church on the Hill.
She is survived by her husband, James V. Smith, her son, Ted V. (Wendi) Smith, four grandchildren, Jessica, Cassidy, Anna Maria, Aidan, and one great-grandchild, Phoenix. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her daughter, Stephanie R. Smith. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
We express our sincere gratitude to VITAS Healthcare/Hospice. Newcomer Funeral Home in Longwood, Florida, will provide cremation services and burial will take place at a later date in Lenox, Massachusetts.
